Signs of Spring, Sips of Sustainability

Spring is just around the corner, the first bulbs are peaking through the soil, birdsong is coming back to life and we’re all looking forward to a little more blue sky after months of grey. As nature starts to spring back into life, it feels like the perfect time to share a little about our sustainability values.

Over the years, we have been committed to making environmentally conscious decisions in every part of the brewery. At Bluestone Brewing co, our ethos has always been simple: produce great-tasting beer, with as little impact on the planet as possible.

From solar panels powering the brewery and a zero-waste brewing process (spent grain going straight to farm animals for their feed, our own spring water supply, and greywater and blackwater naturally filtered through reed beds) to compostable packaging and 100% recycled materials used wherever possible (and any excess cardboard donated to the local gardening club), we’re always finding ways to reduce our footprint.

With the help of Swansea University, we are a part of a funded research project exploring innovative ways to reduce emissions, including using microalgae to capture our waste Co2. Read more about this project here and read the report here.

Sustainability extends beyond our brewing. We’ve built compost toilets, planted wildflower roofs, and made our community a priority; hosting clubs like the gardening club, running our green hop beer project and holding fundraising events and a monthly quiz night in support of charities such as Wales Air Ambulance.

In 2023, we were named Best Sustainable Business at the SIBA Independent Beer Awards and became the first brewery in the world to earn Green Key sustainability accreditation, an international award that recognises environmentally sustainable businesses. We’re also committed to the Business Wales Green Growth Pledge

It’s not just about beer, it’s about doing our bit for the environment, caring for the place we call home and building a climate-resilient business that will stand the test of time.

Here’s to longer days, greener ways, and delicious pints shared with good people!
